Richie Sowa: Man Made Island

British eco-pioneer Richart Sowa began to build "Spiral Island II" in 2007 in the waters of Isla Mujeres off Cancun, Mexico. He filled nets with empty discarded plastic bottles to support a structure of plywood and bamboo, on which he poured sand and planted numerous plants, including mangroves. The island is about 25 metres (82 ft) in diameter and is set on 100,000 plastic bottles. It has three beaches, a house, two ponds, a solar-powered waterfall and river, a wave-powered washing machine and solar panels.
